Optical media is expected to be a long tail business because many consumers continue to use existing hardware such as Blu-ray & DVD players or car CD players rather than upgrade to new technologies. This is similar to legacy recording media such as floppy disc, audio & VHS cassettes which continued to be purchased for decades after hardware was superseded. It also has the advantage that it is the only storage media designed for long term archival if it is stored in the right conditions.
When you ask people what possessions they would rescue from their burning house, one of the most frequent answers is the photograph album or the computer or storage device with their digital images saved on them. When in panic mode it’s interesting that we would probably grab photos rather than valuable jewellery.
Photographs preserve the important moments, events and people in our lives. The ceremonies of birth and birthdays, marriages and anniversaries, holidays and new houses are all recorded because they matter. Photographs are our personal story, a timeline of our lives filled with faces and places that we love.
Personal data protection laws are springing up around the world. You’ve probably heard of the EU’s one. They have made organisations acutely aware of the need to protect any personal data placed in their care. Not to do so can result in massive fines. Under General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) can fine organisations up to 4% of global turnover for any given personal data breach. Quite apart from this, a breach can cause reputational damage and great harm to the individuals whose data is leaked, stolen or lost. They may well sue, which will only add to the expense, both reputational and financial.
While the computer industry has enabled sophisticated processing of personal data, it has also facilitated its loss. Corporate IT systems and networks have all manner of measures in place to minimise the risk of a data breach, but it’s a different story when data is physically on the move. How many times have you heard of mobile phones, laptops, USB sticks, portable hard drives or optical discs being mislaid or stolen?

At Verbatim, we are committed to helping customers keep their data safe – and supporting businesses with encrypted products to adhere with GDPR. We offer a wide range of portable storage devices that are protected by the AES 256-bit encryption system which has never been cracked. The devices, be they HDDs, SSDs, USB drives or HDD enclosures are protected by keypads, fingerprint recognisers or conventional computer password entry. As long as the passwords (or fingers) cannot be accessed by the wrong people, the stored data is secure.
Remote working has been a developing trend for some time now and we are seeing an increase in the number of employees working from home. However, this can be a real challenge. It’s likely that you need to make adjustment to the way you work and how you interact with your family, friends and coworkers.
What’s also important is to have a comfortable set up for you to work, together with all the necessary equipment. Having the right devices on hand to keep you connected, working efficiently, and reliably backed up can be vital.
